The Chaffee Art Center, Rutland

The Chaffee Art Center, prominently located on Main Street in Rutland, was built in 1895 by George Chaffee and served as a residence into the 1920s. The building was closed for nearly 35 years until it was reopened in 1961 as part of the Rutland Bicentennial celebration. The success of the event led to the creation of the Arts Associations and a permanent arts center. The Chaffee hosts a wide variety of cultural programming including youth summer camps, art classes, music lessons, and exhibit space. The Preservation Trust of Vermont holds a preservation easement on the building. Funds will be used to reconstruct one of the building’s three masonry chimneys, which are all in need of extensive repairs.
