Orleans County Grammar School, Brownington

Built c.1820, the Orleans County Grammar School was used by Alexander Twilight, an African American educator and legislator, who revolutionized education in Orleans County in the 1830s-1850s. Mr. Twilight taught students from Vermont and northern New England, but later leaders were not as successful as Twilight. The building was eventually given to the Grange, who moved it down the hill to a new location. There is stayed for over 100 years until it was moved back to its original location in 2016. The building now serves as an education center for the Old Stone House Museum. Funds will be used for exterior repairs and painting. The Historical Society received a 1772 grant in 2022 for work on the Twilight House but has completed the project and closed the grant.

1772 Grant Funds Awarded: $9,400
